Du Roi Agritech commenced operations in 2009, and represents an initiative to commercialize the production of tissue culture plants into the South African sugar industry. Well-established as a technology across the majority of sugar-growing regions in the world, tissue culture represents a means of delivering disease-free, true-to-type and juvenile plant material into the Global sugar industry. The use of such plant material is widely expected to lead to the increased productivity of sugarcane plantations, and therefore the profitability and sustainability of the industry as a whole. Furthermore, it allows for the accelerated propagation of plant material, with the concurrent advantages this brings in terms of the introduction of new varieties and the control of source plant material.
Currently the following varieties are available under licence agreement from the South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI):
NCo376, N12, N14, N16, N19, N23, N25, N31, N32, N36, N37, N39, N40, N41, N42, N45, N46, N47, N48, N49, N50, N53
